Princes,
The following is a statement from Chris McDonough, Director of Computer
Projects.

Dear VTES Players and Princes,
We wanted to let you know that we have heard your specific concerns and
requests about the functionality of the VTES pages and we understand why you
are rightly disappointed and feeling a little angry about the process.
We are taking immediate steps to correct what we feel are the largest
concerns and then hoping for your feedback on where to go from there. Our
ultimate goal is to respond to the fans who make the game what it is and
give them the best experience we can.
A little history will hopefully help you to understand why we made the
mistakes that we have and what our steps will be to correct them in
extremely short order.
First, we had to update the VTES system and move it to our new servers.
Behind the scenes, it was running on outdated software that was no longer
compatible with the PHP/SQL system we had migrated the rest of the White
Wolf site to. If we had problems with that machine, we no longer had staff
available who could update or fix it. If we had problems with that software,
we had little hope of correcting them. We also wanted to add additional
functionality so that users of the White Wolf site as a whole would have
their VEKN info stored with all their other White Wolf info. Allowing them
to access VEKN, The Camarilla, The forums, the online store and the chats,
etc. all with one login. We wanted to be able to make VEKN events appear
with all other White Wolf convention events on the main page calendar while
still showing VEKN only events on the VEKN page.
I believe our biggest errors in making the site live was poor placement of
materials and underestimating how much work was done by the Princes for
other players without internet access. Many of the old features of the site
(like the ability to search for VEKN players by name for example) are still
active, but they were moved to universal areas of the site like the "game
finder" on the main White Wolf page (which also lets you find tabletop
players in your area and Camarilla members). You could also look up players
by VEKN umbers there etc. We assumed that most folks were managing their own
rankings and severely underestimated the VAST amount of work Princes do to
support their players, the game and the events.
The long and short of it is, our apologies for a poorly thought out
interface, accessibility and functionality.
So what are we going to do to fix it?
First, we are making a few quick fixes we expect to be up by early next
week. These will include, no longer having to be logged in to search for
other players. The reason we required logins is that people were data-mining
those lists to use as spam lists to send e-mails to everyone in a city or
state announcing their local conventions, their new product, their stolen
downloads or other events not appropriate to that game finder. However, I
feel the benefits of making those searches easy to use outweighs the small
amount of problems being caused by unscrupulous people. Displaying names for
rankings imported from the old database as we now realize many of those
players will never migrate to the White Wolf login (those that do will still
have all their support in one place as discussed above). Prince's will be
able to enter VEKN id's for new players and have them ranked even if those
players don't have a "White Wolf" account.
In the future, our intent is to place a greater focus on keeping all info
related to VEKN very specific on the VEKN pages and we will be making more
prominent links for users to be able to find that info. We will also keep an
eye towards not forcing users to login and keeping as much data "public" as
we can without compromising the privacy of users.
Finally we hope you will bear with us a little longer while we make these
changes and accept our apologies for not spending a more time consulting
with the fans and princes to make sure that we were meeting their needs. We
know you guys are what make this game and community function and I take
complete responsibility for letting this thing go live without putting it
past the community first.
Oscar Garza (
ogarza@white-wolf.com ) will be our main conduit for
suggestions and functionality requests as we move forward. In the meantime
if you'd prefer to address concerns or criticisms directly with me, you may
e-mail me at

Sincerely,
Chris McDonogh
